Municipal Tax Calculator Last year, the Sunrise City Commission proactively addressed residents' concerns by substantially lowering the municipal tax rate. The Commission also provided a $25,000 exemption for eligible Sunrise residents over the age of 65, in addition to the County's existing $25,000 senior exemption. With the statewide passage of Amendment 1 in January 2008, all homesteaded property owners received an additional $25,000 exemption on the non-school portion of their tax bill. This new legislation means eligible Sunrise seniors can have up to $100,000 of their home's value exempted from municipal taxes. Most homesteaded residents under age 65 will now have a $50,000 exemption. Due to exemptions, the owners of nine percent of residential properties in Sunrise - 3,100 homes - do not pay any property tax. For 2008, the City Manager has proposed a tax rate that will provide even more savings for over 90% of Sunrise homeowners with homestead exemptions. These savings are considerably larger when measured over two years. The one-year savings on the average homesteaded residential property in Sunrise - with a municipal assessed value of $149,370 - is $74.34. Over two years, this savings grows to $166.97.
